Stage One of the Tour of Utah (UCI 2.1), a 180 kilometer stage from Brian Head to Cedar City, saw the team begin their 6-day challenge against some of the world’s top teams; ultimately delivering Eric Young to fourth on the stage in the field sprint. Young landed seventh overall on the general classification standings at ten seconds back, as Avermaet gained a ten second time bonus for the stage win, and the day-long breakaway riders, Chris Jones (UnitedHealthcare), Michael Torckler (Bissell), Max Jenkins (5-Hour Energy), and Tiago Machado (RadioShack Leopard) collected the time bonuses from the intermediate sprints.
Forced to react to a late attack within the final kilometer by stage winner Greg Van Avermaet (BMC Racing), the Orange and Black leadout train, led by captain Alex Candelario with Young on his wheel, took control at the front of the splintered peloton and brought Young within meters of Avermaet, but the team was unable to reel in the hard charging ProTour rider.
Jesse Anthony, 2011 Tour of Utah stage winner, pounced on several opportunities to gain points in the Ski Utah King of the Mountain’s competition in stage one. His effort on the climbs placed him third overall in the KOM classification.
With five stages remaining on the difficult route north, the Orange and Black also sit first overall in the team classification.
“Although we narrowly missed a podium, the team did well, especially given the altitude adjustment out here and the difficulty of the course,” said Performance Director Jonas Carney. “Young is riding very well and the result today proved that. We also always expect some good things out of (Jesse) Anthony here in Utah, and he showed he is up to the task on some of the early climbs. Leading the team standings in a nice bonus as well. We are looking forward to the rest of the week and I know we are really enjoying the new route.”
Stage Two will take the peloton from Panguitch to Torrey along a 210 kilometer route with nearly 10,000 feet of climbing along four KOM climbs and two intermediate sprints.
