Eric Young second in stage 1 of 2013 Tour of Alberta

Ryan Anderson fourth after Sagan narrowly out-kicks Optum p/b KBS sprinters

Eric Young finished second in the first stage of the Tour of Alberta, an as-promised field sprint in downtown Camrose that was yet another instance of Peter Sagan (Cannondale) vs. the peloton. The newly crowned US criterium champion was the first to start his sprint after being delivered to the front of the race by his teammates, launching on a slight uphill leading into the finish. He built a significant gap on the Slovakian sprinter after a sustained effort over the final 200 meters, but was overtaken at the line. Anderson finished fourth after following Young’s early jump in the sprint.

“I had Ryan on my wheel, and I just kind of went,” Young told cyclingnews.com. “When I looked back there was a bit of a gap, so I just put my head down and hoped for the best. Sagan was fast enough out of the group to catch me at the end right before the line. Obviously I wish I could have held on, but that was a tough little hill at the end of this race. I gave it my best shot.”

The sprint came after the peloton caught a four-man breakaway with one lap to go on the closing circuit in Camrose, and was another chance for the team to battle with Sagan, who out-dueled Anderson twice at the USA Pro Challenge. There will be more opportunities for the leadout to operate over the course of Alberta’s relatively flat five stages, and the team will also look for chances to move Tom Zirbel and Chad Haga, who hover at around 40 seconds back on general classification, further up the overall standings.
