The men and women of Optum p/b KBS continued their Arizona race campaign this weekend, competing in the Tucson Bicycle Classic, a three-day stage race featuring a time trial, road race, and circuit race. Leah Kirchmann, coming off a big win at the USA CRITS series opener last week, continued her dominance at three-day event, nearly sweeping the stages (she finished 2nd in the time trial by a slim seven second margin) and racking up time bonuses on the final day’s circuit race on her way to claiming the team’s first general classification victory of 2013.
“Leah has really stepped up in our early races here and it is a great sign to see her nearly sweep the podiums in Tucson,” said Performance Director Rachel Heal. “The courses were a bit similar to what we will be seeing in the NRC opener in Redlands in a few weeks, so it was great practice for everyone on the team.”
Eric Young showed some of the speed he will be bringing to the Optum p/b KBS roster at the Tucson event, grabbing his first victory in orange and black at Saturday’s 80-mile road race. Young followed up his first team victory with a 6th place finish in Sunday’s circuit race, finishing third on the final GC podium. Teammate Alex Candelario finished ninth overall.
