Zirbel wins Redlands ITT, moves into yellow
Reigning US National Time Trial Champion Tom Zirbel muscled his way to victory at stage 2 of the Redlands Bicycle Classic and into the overall race lead. After finishing runner-up to former teammate Chad Haga in 2013, Zirbel returned to the 12.5 kilometer route along the north shore of Big Bear Lake and posted this years fastest time – stopping the clock at 14:56 and the only rider to go sub-15 minutes.
After averaging 31.34 mph in the time trial, Zirbel rode himself into the yellow jersey and now stands atop the overall general classification. Teammate Will Routley finished 6th on the day, 20 seconds behind Zirbel’s winning time, and moved up to 2nd in the overall – capitalizing on his 3rd place performance in the circuit race.
Kirchmann leads Optum Women
After finishing 3rd at the opening stage circuit race, Leah Kirchmann put her time trial skills on display in stage two, finishing 2nd to Alison Powers (UnitedHealthcare) at 35 seconds back. Kirchmann now sits 2nd on the overall GC, 34 seconds behind Powers. Veteran teammate Janel Holcomb finished 8th on the stage, and moved up to 13th on the GC at 1:33.
