Tour of the Gila Stage 3: Zirbel 2nd in TT, Jones moves into Red Jersey

Great performances today by the Orange & Black in Silver City, NM at the Sram Tour of the Gila. Stage 3’s time trial helped propel Optum p/b KBS’ top climber into the leader’s Red Jersey, taking over the lead by just 2 seconds. Jones finished the stage an impressive 4th place while teammate Tom Zirbel grabbed 2nd on the day. Will Routley also posted a good time for 13th on the day and now sits in 9th overall

Jonas Carney Stage 3 Race Report

Stage 3 was the time trial at the Tour of the Gila. It’s a tough 16 mile TT with lots of climbing. Tom Zirbel has won it in the past and we were hoping for a stage win. We were also hoping that Carter Jones would move up on the GC.

Tom had a solid ride, posting a time 25 seconds faster than his winning time from last 2013. Hard to tell but it could have been because this year was very calm and warm unlike last year. In the end Tom was only outdone by Serhei Tvetcov from the Jelly Belly team. While we were disappointed not to win the stage, Carter had a fantastic ride, finishing 4th in the TT, only three tenths of a second off the podium. This moved Carter into the leaders jersey going into saturday’s criterium.

The criterium is in downtown Silver City. We are hoping for an uneventful day as Sunday’s Gila Monster Road Race is one of the most brutal road races in America and if we are still leading the race we will have our work cut out for us.
