Ramsden and Anthony place 2nd, 3rd respectively
Denise Ramsden finished a close 2nd this morning in the opening criterium event at the famed Laguna Seca Raceway in Monterey, California. Racing the 1-kilometer section of race track between turns 2-11, the riders put their bike handling skills on display through “The Corkscrew,” the world-famous hard-left, hard-right corner combination with a 109-foot drop in elevation, in the blink of an eye. Ramsden formed part of a 4 rider break and nearly came away with the win. Teammate and recent double stage winner at the Redlands Bicycle Classic, Leah Kirchmann cleaned up the sprint from the bunch and grabbed 5th. Ramsden and Kirchmann are joined this weekend by teammates Joelle Numainville and Courteney Lowe, who is in her first race back after surgery on a pinched iliac artery in her leg.
Jesse Anthony races to 3rd
A reduced 2-rider squad is tackling the men’s events, as lingering illness and injury from the Mexican and Portuguese race campaigns have left some of the roster home recovering. Jesse Anthony and Ryan Mele are flying the Orange & Black flag for Optum p/b KBS, and things have started well with Anthony finishing 3rd in the criterium at Laguna Seca.
Tomorrow’s road races start at noon followed by a rare day off on Saturday. The weekend will then wrap with a circuit race on Sunday.
