Young Wins Opening Stage of Grand Prix Cycliste de Saguenay

Sprinter and reigning US criterium champion Eric Young has won stage one of Quebec’s Grand Prix Cycliste de Saguenay, a 103-mile circuit race through Saguenay’s beautiful La Baie district.

Will Routley kicked things off for the orange and black in the early breakaway, which was caught with three laps remaining. Young dispatched the competition in the ensuing field sprint, capturing yellow and the points jersey in the process.

The stage win marks a good start to the team’s lengthy Canadian campaign, with three-time Canadian Olympian Eric Wohlberg in the director’s seat. Read Wohlberg’s report on the stage win in Quebec.

They will head next to the Tour de Beauce (June 11-15). The women will began a concurrent block of racing at the one-day UCI 1.1 ranked Crono Gatineau and Grand Prix Gatineau near Ottowa.

In other Canadian team news: reigning Canadian criterium champion Leah Kirchmann has been selected to ride for Team Canada at the 20th annual Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland (July 23 – August 3).
