Men’s Training Camp Photo Retrospective

Training camp is about riding, riding, more riding. Old friends and new recruits acquaint themselves with each other and their bikes on some of our country’s most stunning stretches of pavement. This photo essay captures a loose chronology of camp. It begins casually in the driveway of the team house, where mechanics tune equipment and athletes prepare themselves mentally for the challenges of a week of increasingly hard riding. What begins as short, talkative small group rides moves into individual action shooting and friendly match sprints, and crescendos in long, grueling rides with 10,000 plus feet of climbing through the Santa Monica Canyons, dazzling California State Route 33, and beyond.

THE TEAM PLACES A VERY SERIOUS EMPHASIS ON ANTI-DOPING (VISIT THE OUTTERLINE.COM TO READ MORE). TWO RIDERS, PHIL GAIMON AND BRAD HUFF, HAVE ODES TO CLEAN SPORT TATTOOED ON THEIR BODIES.

PERFORMANCE MANAGER ERIC WOHLBERG HAS A SERIOUS LOVE OF VINTAGE AUTOMOBILES. HE’S PICTURED HERE IN THE COCKPIT OF HIS VINTAGE BUICK LE SABRE STATION WAGON. AS YOU CAN IMAGINE, IT GETS FANTASTIC MILEAGE.

CALIFORNIA STATE ROUTE 33 IS AN ICONIC ROUTE RUNNING NORTH FROM VENTURA THROUGH THE TRANSVERSE RANGES AND SETTLING INTO THE WESTERN SIDE OF THE SAN JOAQUIN VALLEY. IT IS THE SETTING FOR THE 1978 THRILLER “THE CAR” STARRING JAMES BROLIN. THE MOVIE WAS ONE OF NUMEROUS ROAD MOVIES OF THE 1970S, INCLUDING SPIELBERG’S CAREER LAUNCHING 1971 FILM “THE DUEL”.

A SOMEWHAT LITTLE KNOWN FACT ABOUT THE PELOTON – IN THE CHAOS OF THE FINAL KILOMETERS LEADING INTO A FIELD SPRINT, SPRINTERS HAVE BEEN KNOWN TO HEADBUTT EACH OTHER FOR POSITIONING AT SPEEDS EXCEEDING 50 MPH.

HIGH SPEED DESCENTS ARE ONE OF CYCLING’S MOST BEAUTIFUL AND DANGEROUS MOMENTS. THE PRECISION AND BRAVERY REQUIRED TO SUCCESSFULLY COMPLETE ONE OF THESE CHOREOGRAPHED DOWNHILL WEAVES WOULD SCARE THE SPANDEX OFF OF ALL BUT THE MOST ACCOMPLISHED RIDERS.

WITH ALL THAT HARD RIDING, ITS ALWAYS NICE TO HAVE A CHANCE TO DIP THE TOES INTO THE SAND AND LOOSEN THINGS UP A BIT. THE TEAM’S FRONT PORCH HAPPENS TO BE THE SERENE SILVER STRAND BEACH, A MOSTLY QUIET BEACHFRONT WITH SOME SERIOUSLY POUNDING SURF.
