On November 10th, volunteers from Optum Pro Cycling and the San Francisco 49ers teamed up to build bicycles for foster youth in the Bay Area. For the third consecutive year, the two organiations partnered with Turning Wheels for Kids, a passionate 501(3)C run entirely by volunteers who provide bikes, helmets and locks to underprivileged kids around California.
When getting ready for a race as big as the Amgen Tour of California it takes a full circle effort from our staff, riders, vehicles, and even equipment for our team to perform at the level needed to succeed at such a prestigious event. Our new RV has come in handy for transporting everything needed for the race, even the riders.

Today was a beautiful trip from Cheshunt to Welwyn Garden City. The Garden Cities of England, I learned from our fantastic assistant for the race John Deering, were designed to be an attractive, comfortable destination for families seeking a home after the destruction and subsequent rebuilding of large swaths of London in World War II. The route sped through small villages, lush forests, and wide open rolling plains. One constant – roads only slightly larger than your average bike path.
