Photo Essay | Turning Wheels for Kids with the San Francisco 49ers

On November 10th, volunteers from Optum Pro Cycling and the San Francisco 49ers teamed up to build bicycles for foster youth in the Bay Area. For the third consecutive year, the two organiations partnered with Turning Wheels for Kids, a passionate 501(3)C run entirely by volunteers who provide bikes, helmets and locks to underprivileged kids around California.


2014 UCI Team Time Trial World Championship

The women of the Orange & Black faced off against the best riders and teams in the world at the 2014 UCI Road World Championships. The team averaged nearly 30 MPH on the 23 mile course to placed 4th overall, just seven seconds shy of the podium. Here are some photos from the memorable race day.

The chance to traverse Colorado’s snowy peaks and lush valleys for eight days is a gift from nature, but a stage race is inevitably a grind. Daily routine settles over athletes and staff like heavy dust. Nerves and adrenaline vibrate together at each start line. In the thin mountain air, oxygen is a commodity. Lost opportunity hangs heavy in the air after a rough finish, while success and victory heals all. This year’s rain-soaked USA Pro Challenge provided a full spectrum of emotions for the team.


Anthony, Werner Kick off Orange & Black’s Cross Season at CrossVegas

Crystal Anthony and Kerry Werner kicked off the Orange & Black’s third season of cyclocross this Wednesday at Clif Bar CrossVegas presented by Lazer in Las Vegas, NV. The nighttime race now in its seventh year is the largest cross race in the country and regularly draws substantial numbers of raucous fans. Former world champion and current Belgian Champion Sven Nys took the win for his second consecutive year while American Meredith Miller took the win for the women.


2014 Tour of Alberta | Stage 5

The team fought hard in the closing stage of the Tour of Alberta and delivered Ryan Anderson to a second place finish just inches behind Daryl Impey of Orica-GreenEDGE. It was a tough 11-lap circuit race in downtown Edmonton that featured a steep climb up Bellamy Hill Road and tough weather conditions. The Edmonton native also finished fifth overall and retained the red Best Canadian Rider jersey for the second consecutive year. The race also marked the last race for team captain Alex Candelario who is retiring after 13 years of professional racing.

2014 USA Pro Challenge Stage 1 | Photo Essay

The Orange & Black kept the momentum going in the beautiful, and tough opening stage of the 2014 USA Pro Challenge where Carter Jones continued to impress with another top ten finish racing to fourth on the day.

The normally clean shaven Jesse Anthony shaved a handlebar mustache for the USA Pro Challenge in honor of team captain and longtime Optum rider Alex Canderlario, racing his final season in the pro peloton.
